What Should I Ask a Carpenter Before Hiring Them?

Before hiring a carpenter, it helps to ask a few clear questions so you know what is included and what to expect.

Start by asking whether they have completed similar work before. This is especially important for bespoke furniture, restoration work, period properties or detailed finishing. Ask to see photos of previous projects if possible.

You should also ask what materials they recommend and why. Timber, MDF, hardwood, softwood and reclaimed materials all have different uses, costs and finishes.

A good quote should explain the work involved, what materials are included, whether finishing is included, and any likely timescales. It is also sensible to ask whether the area needs to be cleared before work starts and whether other trades are needed first.

For larger jobs, ask how the project will be managed from measuring through to fitting. Clear communication at the beginning usually leads to a smoother job and a better finish.
